What is a hot water heat pump?

A hot water heat pump is an energy-efficient system that heats water by extracting heat from the surrounding air. It uses a refrigerant and a vapour compression cycle to transfer this heat into a water tank, even in cooler conditions. This method significantly reduces electricity use compared to traditional electric water heaters.

Hot water heat pumps use the same principle that make all heat pumps so energy-efficient: most of the heat energy they use comes from the ambient air, with only some being directly powered by electricity.

That means power savings of up to 79%! When you consider that most Kiwi homes spend around 30% of their power bills on hot water heating**, the savings can really add up.

Why choose a hot water heat pump?

First off, efficiency. Hot water heat pumps are way more efficient than old-fashioned hot water cylinders, so you can expect to save money on your power bill.

Next, they’re good for the planet. Everything we can do to reduce household energy use means less needs to be generated. Even in New Zealand, big part of our electricity generation comes from fossil fuels, so less is better!

Finally, think about home resale time. Imagine choosing between two homes, one with an old-fashioned hot water cylinder and the other with one that uses 70-79% less electricity. Which one would you choose?

    About the Haier range

All-in-one or split system to suit your home perfectly.

    Haier Monoblock

    200L/250L/330L

Haier’s Monoblock is a one-piece water heater that uses heat pump technology and careful design to create an energy-efficient, high performance water heater.

The heat pump technology results in a 69 to 79%* (Monoblock) reduction in electricity used to heat the same volume of water compared to an electric resistance heater. This is likely to lower your electricity bill and save you money every year.

It features R290 natural refrigerant, which has a very low global warming potential, making it an eco-friendly choice for sustainable households. With built-in smart controls and WiFi connectivity, you can schedule heating, monitor usage, and take advantage of solar energy or off-peak electricity rates through the SmartHQ™ app.

Designed for durability, it includes triple-layer corrosion protection on the tank and operates effectively in a wide range of temperatures—from -7°C to 45°C—making it reliable even in colder climates. Its compact monoblock design simplifies installation and reduces maintenance. Whether you're upgrading from an electric cylinder or planning a new energy-efficient home, this model provides long-term savings, smart convenience, and a reduced environmental impact.

*Based on Haier Monoblock 200L and 250L compared to standard electric storage water heater in Zones 1 to 5 in AS/NZS4234.

    Haier Split System

    280L

A Haier Split System, just like a regular heat pump, combines an outdoor unit with an inside hot water cylinder. This can be a good choice if you have an electric hot water cylinder inside that you’re replacing and have room outside for a small external heat pump unit.

No more electric heating element to heat water – instead, this system uses efficient heat pump technology. This technology, which transfers heat from the air to the water in the tank instead of heating via electricity alone, results in a reduction in electricity of 64 to 68%** (Split System) to heat the same volume of water compared to a traditional electric resistance water heater.

The Haier Split System Hot Water Heat Pump features a fast recovery function designed to quickly reheat water, making it ideal for large households or colder regions. It delivers an impressive 4.58kW heating capacity, and includes a Boost Mode that speeds up recovery even further during high-demand periods.

** Energy savings of 64-68% are based on Haier Split System 280L when compared to a standard resistive electric storage water heater in Zones 1 to 5 in AS/NZS4234.

Water reheats fast in the Split System with a heating capacity of 4.58kW, the largest in our heat pump water heater range, meaning that even if a large volume of water has been consumed, fresh water is rapidly heated to keep the hot water flowing.

    FAQs

What is a Haier hot water heat pump and how does it differ from a conventional electric water heater?

A Haier hot water heat pump extracts heat from the ambient air and uses it to heat water, so it requires much less electricity than a conventional electric-resistance heater.

What warranty does my hot water heat pump come with?

When you purchase any new Haier Heat Pump Water Heater for domestic use you automatically receive a five year manufacturer’s warranty covering parts and labour for servicing. There is also a 7-year warranty on the cylinder.

Will I still get hot water when it’s cold outside?

Yes – just like any heat pump, there is still energy available in the ambient air when it’s cold outside. Your Haier hot water heat pump will keep working down to as low as -7º Celsius on the Monoblock model and as low as -15º on the split system model.

How noisy is a hot water heat pump unit during operation?

Noise levels for Monoblock hot water heat pump units are around 43 dB(A).

Does it need to be outside, or can it be indoors?

For Monoblock systems, the entire unit must be installed outdoors because the heat pump component must draw ambient air.

For Split systems, you have flexibility: the cylinder can be indoors or outdoors, while the heat pump is outdoors.

Installing your hot water heat pump

When you select a Haier hot water heat pump from HRV, you can rely on our skilled team of Master Plumbers and Master Electricians to ensure a safe and professional installation.

On the day you can expect to be temporarily without both hot and cold water until your new system is connected and safety tested. Your HRV expert will arrange a time that works for you, as well as, agree on where you want each component installed, during your free home assessment.

HRV can decommission and remove your old hot water heating system – either an electric hot water cylinder or an instant gas system.
