Why home ventilation matters in New Zealand
If you wake to streaming windows, notice a musty smell in the wardrobe or spot black mould creeping along the bathroom ceiling, you are not alone. Many Kiwi homes are prone to damp, and a good ventilation system is one of the most effective ways to fix it.
New Zealand’s maritime climate brings mild but humid conditions for much of the year. Everyday life adds even more moisture: cooking, showering, drying washing and simply breathing all release water vapour into the air. When that moist air meets cold glass or walls, it turns into condensation.
Left unchecked, that moisture can:
- Encourage mould and dust mites, both common triggers for asthma and allergies
- Make your home harder to heat, because damp air takes more energy to warm
- Damage your home over time, from peeling paint and stained curtains to rotting window frames and timber
A mechanical ventilation system replaces stale, moist indoor air with fresher, filtered air. But not all systems work the same way. This guide explains what to look for, how the leading NZ brands compare, and the questions to ask before you buy.
What to look for in a ventilation system
Before comparing brands, it helps to know which features make the biggest difference. These five criteria will help you judge any system on its merits.
1. System type: positive pressure or balanced
There are two main approaches:
- Positive pressure systems draw air from the roof space (or outside), filter it and deliver it into your living areas. The gentle pressure pushes stale, moist air out through natural gaps. They suit most existing NZ homes.
- Balanced heat recovery systems extract stale air and bring in fresh air at the same time, passing both through a heat exchanger. This captures warmth from the outgoing air. They suit newer, well-insulated or airtight homes.
The right choice depends on your home’s construction, so an in-home assessment is worth having.
2. Air filtration quality
The filter decides what stays out of the air your family breathes. Ask:
- What particle size does it capture? Smaller is better for pollen, mould spores and fine dust.
- Is it tested to a recognised standard? ISO 16890 is the current international standard for ventilation filters.
- How often does it need replacing, and what does that cost?
For households with asthma or allergies, filtration is often the most important factor of all.
3. Temperature control and heat recovery
Good systems manage temperature intelligently. They use sensors to decide when roof-space air is warm enough to be useful in winter, and avoid pumping in overly hot air in summer. Balanced systems go further by recovering heat from outgoing air. Ask how the system behaves across the seasons, and whether summer cooling options are available.
4. Automation and sensors
The best systems are “set and forget”. Look for:
- Temperature and humidity sensing, so airflow adjusts to conditions
- Air quality monitoring, such as VOC or CO₂ sensors
- An easy controller, ideally with a clear touchscreen
- Wi-Fi and app control, for remote adjustments and software updates
5. Brand trust, warranty and local support
A ventilation system is a long-term investment. Consider how long the brand has operated in New Zealand, the length of its warranty, and whether it offers local servicing and easy filter replacements. Independent health endorsements and consumer trust awards are useful signals too.
Comparing NZ’s leading ventilation systems
HRV, DVS and SmartVent all offer credible systems that can make a real difference to a damp home. Where they differ is in filtration, smart features, independent health endorsement and depth of NZ heritage.

DVS
DVS is a well-established NZ brand with more than two decades in the market. Its range covers both positive pressure and balanced heat recovery systems, with EC fans and humidity-sensing models. The top-tier Premium Connect adds CO₂ sensing and Wi-Fi. DVS is a solid option for homeowners who want a familiar local name.
SmartVent
SmartVent, from Simx Ltd, offers a broad range of positive pressure and heat recovery systems. Its F7 standard filter, optional HEPA and carbon upgrades, and wireless sensors on premium models give buyers plenty of choice. A 5-year system warranty applies.
HRV
HRV stands out on three fronts that matter most to many families.
- Filtration you can measure. HRV’s patented Classic Pro filter is rated to ISO 16890 and captures over 95% of particles at 0.4 microns, including pollen, mould spores and dust. It lasts around two years in normal conditions.
- Smarter, connected control. Classic Pro and Balanced systems pair a 5-inch touchscreen with Wi-Fi and a mobile app. Built-in monitoring tracks temperature, humidity, VOCs and eCO₂, so airflow adapts automatically. Remote software updates keep the system current, and an optional Summer Kit helps with warmer months.
- Trust that is independently recognised. HRV home ventilation carries Sensitive Choice approval, and HRV has been named a Reader’s Digest Trusted Brand for home ventilation five years in a row.
With positive pressure and balanced options, HRV can match the system to the home, rather than the other way round.
Why trust and accreditations matter
Specifications tell you what a system can do. Trust signals tell you how well a brand delivers, year after year. Because a ventilation system runs in your home every day for many years, both matter.
Recognised by New Zealanders
HRV has been named a Reader’s Digest Trusted Brand for home ventilation every year from 2022 to 2026. The award is based on a survey of New Zealand consumers, so it reflects how ordinary Kiwis rate the brands they know. Today, more than 500,000 New Zealanders live in a home with at least one HRV product.
Independent health endorsements
For families living with asthma or allergies, independent endorsement offers reassurance that goes beyond marketing claims. HRV works with:
- Sensitive Choice, whose blue butterfly symbol is used only on products reviewed and approved as asthma and allergy aware
- The Asthma and Respiratory Foundation NZ, supporting research, education and advocacy for better respiratory health
- Allergy New Zealand, which provides information and support for Kiwis living with allergies
Real homes, real results
When comparing brands, look for verified reviews from homeowners in a similar climate and home type to yours. Ask your provider for local examples, and check independent review platforms as well as the brand’s own website. Local support you can rely on
A nationwide branch network makes the practical side easier: in-home assessments, professional installation, servicing and filter replacements from people who know your region’s conditions.
Frequently asked questions
How is a ventilation system installed?
Most systems are installed by trained technicians. A positive pressure system typically sits in the roof space, with ducts feeding ceiling outlets in the main living areas. Balanced systems also need extraction ducting. Your provider should assess your home first and confirm the timeframe before booking.
How often do the filters need replacing?
It depends on the system and filter. HRV’s high-performance filters are designed to last around two years in normal conditions, or sooner in dusty, smoky or high-pollen areas. Other brands set their own intervals, so check before you buy.
Will a ventilation system reduce my power bill?
It can help. Dry air takes less energy to heat than damp air, and sensor-controlled systems can make use of warmer roof-space air when it is available. Savings vary by home, insulation and heating habits, so treat any figure as a guide rather than a promise.
Does ventilation help with Healthy Homes compliance?
The Healthy Homes Standards set ventilation requirements for rental properties, including extraction in kitchens and bathrooms. A whole-home system can support a healthier rental, but it does not automatically meet every requirement. Landlords should check the current standards on Tenancy Services or seek professional advice.
Buyer’s checklist
Take this list to any in-home assessment:
- Is a positive pressure or balanced system right for my home, and why?
- What particle size does the filter capture, and to what standard is it tested?
- How long do filters last, and what do replacements cost?
- Which sensors are included: temperature, humidity, air quality?
- Is there a touchscreen controller, Wi-Fi and app control?
- How does the system manage summer heat?
- How long is the warranty, and what does it cover?
- Is the system independently endorsed for asthma and allergy sufferers?
- Who services the system locally, and how quickly?
